Parasite by Uranium-Sea Parasite by Uranium-Sea
...the way a beautiful image stays with you...
...lodges itself inside you...
...won't be dispelled no matter how hard you try...

A4 Bristol Board
Mechanical Pencil 3.5
eraser pencil
sharpener for eraser pencil
soft real hair brush for blending finish
working time: approx. 50 hours over 4 weeks
(check the step-by-step, if you are interested)

I never thought I could stare at a single A4 paper for an entire month and still not be satisfied with the outcome  :XD:
nevertheless I believe this to be the most elaborate drawing I ever did.
next step: A3 and upward. Curious what's possible there.

anything about this that needs work? suggestions? how do you feel about it?

I have the same compulsion with my work. I've learned to remember something that in your case is true: "Sometimes it's perfect just the way it is."

I don't mean just your talent for fantastic imagery or the skill of your exquisite tonal range but the way they seem effortlessly joined in expression, an illusion common among extraordinary efforts.

If you came upon this somewhere a year from now, you'd think "Wow, I wonder who did that." So stop now, and give yourself time to grow into appreciating it at least as much as some stranger does in the audience.

My only suggestion is that you consider the wonder of your impeccable creative tastes.

This is fantastic. Honestly, I can't think of any significant changes to suggest. It's a little sexy, a little gross, all wrapped up in a feeling of inevitability and loss.

Thanks, that's very sweet.  :D
Personally I like a mixture of sexy and gross...it makes both things stand out even more when you put them in direct comparison.

Loss is a part of our lives, so I hope I get to keep my memory and this image in my head for as long as possible.

So sorry for the late response...
Thank you. In fact I do not have a fully developed plan in about 80 % of my (personal) drawings when I start them. Only a very rough draft of what I want to convey. The rest more or less comes naturally.
If it's commissioned work it's completely planned from the beginning.

Amazing!

MY only suggestion would be to have small tendril-like things coiled- as if grasping- around the rest of his body, like from the armpit to the lower abdomen on the other side.
It would convey a more all-encompassing feeling, like his whole body is being taken over.

thanks for your feedback.  :)   also for the fave, I really appreciate it.
indeed, I was going to do it like you suggested originally, but I already struggled so much with the areas where I did do it that way and decided that "less is more" (so mainly, but not only, for convenience sake)  :ashamed:

Jan!  This is beautiful work!  The concept is so easy to understand too.  Who hasn't had that "parasite" that seems to become part of every thought and carried with you throughout the day?

I'm very happy you can relate to this, thank you.   :)  how do you feel about that state of being haunted by an impression?

it seems it's easy for people to mix up the content of this drawing, though.

There are people we meet in our life, by chance, by fate...take your pick.  Certain souls that seem to touch our own deeper than we understand.  It may be the sound of their voice, a smile, the way they disturb the air around them when they move...we don't always know how but they cause a rift in our own existence.  Next thing you know, you find them creeping into your head, maybe a dream, or even a fantasy.  Random thoughts turn into obsession, then perhaps a possession.  You feel the preoccupation taking all of your control, yet, you don't want to give it up either.  It really is like a parasite.  You know it is there, eating away at you.  Yet, somehow, we embrace it because it makes us feel, makes us aware of life...even if it may end in pain.  It doesn't matter whether it is love, lust, or worship...the effect is the same.  Maybe it is as simple as they somehow found a way in to where we keep the knowledge hidden of wanting something more - a knowledge hidden from ourselves.

(I hope that made sense. :) )

Different things are seen by different viewers.  But, that is what makes art so cool!

yes, it does indeed make sense.  :)
I feel the same way. and it happens way too often, too. but I guess we cannot solely focus on the "more important" things in life all the time. every once in a while it's pleasant just to...float away to different spheres with memories, nostalgias and images enclosed in your heart and mind...

For such detailed work, 50 hours is very surprising. This reminds me of something I can't pin down...what was your inspiration?

a surprisingly long or surprisingly short time?  ;)
I don't stake my name on it, but I don't think I had a visual inspiration for this (well, aside from the male corpus). if you happen to come across something, that might have stimulated this, I'd be glad if you could point me in that direction.
I was aiming to make it look organic and "coherent", but only partly succeeded. looking at it now I have so many more ideas where to go with it.

At first sight I thouht it is a greek god of wine...Then I discovered that is it not, but anyway my first impression remained.

I hope it's a good impression.  :)
on a side note: even though I also deploy it every now and then (see here: fav.me/d8zc6wl) I generally reject the idea of gods having anthropomorphic features. I rather think of them as abstractions.

also: very skillful portfolio you have. pleasant to look at.

Hi Uranium-Sea.
Thank you!

Regarding your picture. Yes, I really liked it. I tried to find an example to better explain what I mean.
Look at this (Echo and Narcissus - greek-mythology):

www.google.com/search?q=greek+…

Thanks for the link to your other picture. It is nice. I also like (my personal taste) your black and white pictures in folder "The box".

best,
Monika
